After an entire week swimming near the shore,

afraid of riptides, afraid more

of what lurked beneath sand-clouded waters, my older

brothers, bored, would reluctantly

help me build sandcastles instead. Our backs blazed,

skin peeling from our faces,

we built with our bare hands the homes we hoped

we’d one day live in;

sad structures we made, wet-heavy and falling apart,

until the sun hung low

on the horizon and the waves turned from vermillion

into firewater, and we’d kick

over what we had made, pick up our sandy shirts

and trek back home, four of us

laughing in the hour of odd-shaped shadows, our

silhouettes growing across

the dirt road before us into surprising shapes,

more like men than boys.
